Okay, So Sometimes I Get a Little Cranky…

Cranky lady<vent>

Sometimes, especially when it’s late and I’m tired, it’s really easy to get on my bad side. My number one pet peeve is bad customer service. Number two is dishonestly, cheating, or trying to take advantage of a kindness. I think I can lump those 3 together, right? Well I’m going to anyway. At least for this story.

To rewind just a bit; I’m in charge of all the marketing and PR, customer service, media relations both social and print, photography, graphic arts, trade show coordination, and online sales, as well as a myriad of other things. I wear so many hats I can’t keep track of them. All this on top of being a mom makes for one busy me!

This story is about my latest blog campaign. Part of my social media/PR duties is to keep Dapper Snappers Kids Belts fresh in everyone’s minds. This means that I organize a blog campaign, beg for bloggers to review Dapper Snappers Kids Belts on their blog, send out samples to said bloggers, and wait patiently for their review. Normally this process woud be tracked in a series of emails with colorful labels to keep me apprised of the current status with each blogger, painstakingly entered into the system one line at a time with their pertinent information, and each step verified several times. All of this is fine if I am just working with a couple bloggers at a time. This campaign however, is the largest one I’ve run so far with almost 50 bloggers! With this many to track, the old system is just not feasible.

In an effort to save some time on my part, and because it was getting late, (very, very late) I emailed Gift Certificate codes to each blogger so they could put in their own information and pick which color they wanted. The normal cost to them would have been around $13.17. Our system only allows gift certificates to be made in increments of $5, so a $15 code was sent to everyone along with instructions that it was “good for 1 Dapper Snapper plus shipping.” You’d think that was plain enough, right?

But I guess seeing that leftover $1.83 was too much for one of them. She saw fit to find a coupon code to get another 15% off so she could also get some add-on clips for free. She got the Dapper Snappers and the clips AND shipping all for FREE. Thankfully, we are our own distributor for online orders. I went into the shopping cart system and voided her order. I also sent her an email expressing my displeasure:

“Thank you for your interest in reviewing Dapper Snappers. We have voided your sample order. The gift certificate was for a Dapper Snapper sample only and not for any additional products. By using a coupon code, you have taken advantage of our generosity and therefore we are rescinding our invitation to do a review.”

The reply I got back was with an attitude of “Well I’m too good for you anyway, so there!” Actually her words were: “If you look at my blog, you’ll see that I mostly do high end reviews, and this is one of the least expensive products I have chosen to review. I don’t fall all over myself to review just any product – I’m very selective so I would consider myself the generous one in this situation, not you.” Same difference.

There were a couple bloggers, one of whom asked first and the other who later apologized frantically after receiving my mass email clarifying a couple things, both paid the extra $1.84 to get the clips. I’m okay with that. I didn’t want it to happen with all of them, and most of them did exactly as I instructed in the them email. But what the too-good-for-me-blogger did was inexcusable. What she doesn’t know is how very wrong she is. She doesn’t understand that she is one of 50 bloggers getting FREE product. That’s money that comes out of our pockets to pay for materials, labor, packaging, and shipping. She doesn’t understand that our little company, although it is growing, is still struggling to make ends meet day to day. She doesn’t get that I stay up until 1 am to get work stuff done I couldn’t do after getting the kids from school until they went to bed. She doesn’t see the sacrifices my family and I make so that she can have something for free.

So by all means; don’t do me any favors. I think I can find a suitable replacement and I’m pretty sure they won’t be so blatantly greedy. So thanks but no thanks…

Have I ranted long enough? I think so.

So, how was your day? lol…

PS. No, I didn’t write her back and I don’t intend to. I’m not interested in starting a fight with someone who doesn’t get it.

I have to share with you one of my favorite quotes for this situation:
“Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.”
