It’s springtime! You know what that means? Spring Cleaning! You have no idea how much stuff migrates from the kid belts office to my house. It’s amazing, really. Bits of elastic here, snaps there, thread over there on that table, snap-cessory protoypes (oh wait, you don’t know about those…) on the desk and so on and so on.

I have decided that some cleaning and rearranging is in order. Not so much decided as have this nagging “need” to clean and organize. I seriously feel like I’m 8 months pregnant and nesting. Ok, I don’t really “feel” pregnant, but I was equating the “nesting” feeling that comes with pregnancy. Anyway, the bottom line is I am TIRED of the clutter. I have to do something about.

It’s not just kids belts stuff either. It’s a garage full of toys and clothes that the kids have out grown, it’s my overflowing craft table, it’s my graveyard of malnourished potted plants on my patio and so much more. We just moved less than two years ago, I don’t remember packing this stuff up and bringing it here, but is it possible to accumulate so much stuff in less than two years? How do people do it living in a house for 5 years or 10? I’m afraid we may look like an episode of Hoarders by that point! I joke, of course, but I am ready to clear out closets, clean off desks, purge the cabinets, and deep clean the rest. I think it’s something in the air… It has to be, I’m not usually cleaner or an organizer, I’m more of a free spirit. Like a feather in the wind floating from one point to the next. (See, I can be profound, too!)

On a side note, every time I hear the word springtime, I think of the song from the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (a movie which disturbs me greatly):

“It’s springtime
the only pretty ring time
birds sing
a ding a ding-a ding
sweet lovers
the spring”

What are you planning to clean this spring?

Owls, how’s that for random?

Owls are big in the fashion world right now. I should know, what with being on the cutting edge of everything kids fashion for our kids belts patterns, after all. There are some really cool looking owls (see above) and some really odd looking owls (see below).

This guy just looks annoyed…

Seriously, though they are everywhere. Owls dominate Pinterest as well as all of the local kids retailers near you and I don’t know about you, but we even had several owl trick or treaters this year. Don’t get me wrong, I think they are super cute, but they just came out of no where and exploded. (Not literally, that would be gross, but you know what I mean.) It always amazes me the things that become popular. Think about it, for every one animal that becomes popular, there are tons that don’t. I mean think of the poor anteater, no one is giving the anteater any love.

While I was perusing the internet for this topic, I came across some interesting things that involve owls. Well… at least interesting to me. Be on the look out soon for a new owl pattern from Dapper Snappers.

You can do owl crafts…

Or you can do owl snacks…

You can have an owl themed party…

Or even an owl themed room…

You can have owls on the beach, if you feel so inclined, though I’m not sure why you would. However, they are cute…

And finally, I’ll leave you with this, because apparently, its easier to be an owl…

The show must go on!

The ABC Kids Show, that is…

Here we are a week away from the show and I feel like we still have so much to do to get our kids belts display tradeshow worthy! I am a bit of a procrastinator, I know this, but is it my fault that everything important has to be done last minute? NOOoooo, well ok, maybe it is partly my fault, but I am blaming it mostly on the dog. Mainly because she can’t argue with me and even if she could, I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t be a very compelling argument, I mean, really what reasoning skills does a dog have? Plus, if I didn’t have to constantly take her for walks or endlessly pull bits of soggy chewed paper from her mouth, then I would have much more time on my hands to do actual tradeshow type work.

Current to do list…

  • Finalize Booth Layout
  • Layout & Print Promo Sheets
  • Take a nap
  • Lose my mind
  • Make sure we have enough product to completed to display everything
  • Finish unpacking my house so I can finally find Bugs brush and no longer have to comb her hair with a plastic fork
  • Finish cleaning out the old house so as to ensure the return of our security deposit
  • Pack for Tradeshow
  • And on and on and on…

Aside from all of that, we are super excited about being involved in the ABC Kids show and really are working day and night to get everything perfect. We will be unveiling some exciting new patterns for our original Dapper Snappers line as well as showcasing the Big Kids Belts, the Dapper Snappers for Moms and Mitten Clips. The show is in Louisville, KY this year so we could go and visit Churchill Downs on our off time (ha ha ha). I am ready for it to be here so I can see the turn out, meet some great new people and feed off of the energy that always goes along with these types of events.

If you are planning on attending, come see us at booth #2433!

Ok, now I have to get back to work….

Shampoo with a Hotdog on it!

not my kid

A typical joke told by my 5 year old son:

Super Dude: Knock Knock!

Me: Who’s there?

Super Dude: Shapoo

Me: Shampoo who?

Super Dude: Shampoo with a hotdog on it! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaaaa! Dat’s funny huh mama!

Oh Super Dude. Someday you’ll get it. I mean, you have an incredible sense of humor, when you’re not trying. For now I get to regale my family, friends, and FaceBook/Twitter buddies with all the funny things you and your sister say. Like at Christmas when you were excitedly opening presents and when your sister asked what present you were opening you exclaimed, “I don’t know but I’ve always wanted it!”  Or your version of Gloria…Real version: Gloria in excelsis deo. Kiddos version: Oh-oh-ohohohohohohohoh-ohia Jesus Christ in stereo. And then the time when the Bug declared that “Jesus Price is Born!”

My kids are funny, smart, and the joy of my life (not to mention my inspiration for inventing those genius Kids Belts). But they do say the darnedest things, don’t they? Well, thanks to someone who contacted me through my blog, I got turned onto a website dedicated to sharing those darnedest things. My Kid is Gifted allows you to share the funny things your kid does and says in a safe environment. I mean, not everyone wants to know every thing your kid does. And you probably don’t want everyone, especially creepy, stalker-types, to know all about your kids. Here you can share with people who want to know the funny things your kids are saying. And you can gauge your own anonymity.

My Kid is Gifted

This site is great. You can submit your kid’s “gifted” moments. You can read about all the other “gifted” kids. You can even help moderate the site by giving a thumbs up or down on stories that have been submitted. This site definitely qualifies as a Squirrel moment! Go check it out now!

Welcome to My Brain…

I should look up how to make a Dapper Snapper...

Welcome to some time well-wasted in my head. Don’t worry, you’ll question it later.

I’ve been thinking a lot. As I think, thoughts swirl around in my noggin like so many random marbles bumping haphazardly in my head making clinking noises to fill the void. So I decided to drag you around with me. Ha!

I’ve decided to make the Bug’s Christmas dress, as I do every year about 2 weeks before Christmas. She wants an “Aurora dress” (aka Sleeping Beauty). Since my main focus in sewing has been those amazing Kids Belts, Dapper Snappers, regular sewing patterns kind of freak me out.

I wonder how the Prompt Tuesday is going at San Diego Momma’s. What’d she call that? Holiday Limericks or something. Hang on, I’ll be right back…Okay, its Bawdy Holiday Prose. I’m the only one who’s left a comment, so if you get a minute you may want to too. As well. Too many to’s. Back to the dress…

I watched some vaguely helpful youtube videos to get insight into the hieroglyphs and foreign terminology in this little package of instructions and tissue paper.

Oh that’s right…

I need to email San Diego Momma to see if I can’t get her permission to repost something. Crap! I can’t find her email address anywhere on her website. Oh wait…We follow each other on Twitter. I could DM (direct message) her to ask for her email address. Or I could just tell her what I want. Wow do I sound like a complete stalker or what in my DM? I just told her some things that would make me want to unfollow myself. Good thing she’s the forgiving type. I’m pretty sure anyway. The dress…the dress…

not directions for sewing a kids belt

After watching some videos, I think I have a handle on this thing. Only, last night, in the middle of sewing the bodice thingie, I broke a needle and the material snagged. I pulled it out so that it was fairly unnoticeable. But then I broke another needle in the same #?!…oh wait, how does that go? Using symbols to represent cuss words…hmmm. What the? What’s taking so long for these sites to come up? Alright. I think I just found a site I could love. Check out Grammar Girl. I am going to start using the terms “Grawlix”, “Disemvowel”, and “Maledicta”. So cool…

As I was saying, I broke another needle in the same *$#%!-ing spot and it snagged the garbage out of it the material. Since I had already sewn the bodice pieces together, I had to start from scratch rather than try to pull out all those tiny seams only to probably snag it even more. Scratch it is! Oh but wait! We need to back up a couple days…

I pulled out the pattern, looked at the mind-boggling amount of materials associated with making a dress of this type, and decided I would have to wait until tomorrow to work on it so I could figure out what the heck “Selvages” are. While I’m repacking everything, Super Dude says that since I’m making the Bug something, what am I going to make for him? Well, certainly not a pink dress! What can I make for a boy anyway? Heyyyyy…Maybe JoAnn’s has a vest and tie pattern I could make for him.

The next day, I drug the kids with me to Jo-Anns and for almost 2 hours they played, got bored, tried to break things, gave up and decided to nap on the bolts of materials. But I found the pattern and by golly I was going to find the right materials.

10 emails??? What in the world is going on? Okay got those taken care of. I hate unread emails. Makes me feel like I’m way behind.

Also not a pattern for sewing kids belts

Isn’t this a cool pattern? And you betcha I’m going to make matching Father/Son vest & tie combos. Hubby thinks I’m crazy. He made me the deal that he wouldn’t tease me until Friday night about my “Oh there’s 3 weeks until a major event? I have to do an impossible project that will keep me up until 2 am the night before it’s needed done!” So what if it’s true…

ZzzzZzzzZzzz…. I just got up from a power nap. Apparently all this thinking makes me tired. That and it may be 35° outside, but it’s like 90° in here. Garble. Grumble. Ugh. Midday naps are not good. This is what I get for staying up until 1:30 am. Ok, where was I?

Today I recut the pattern and sewed it back together. Now I need to get back to where I was last night, sewing the neck of the shell and lining together. But alas, I don’t have the time. I have just been informed that our Mama Snappers are going to be on BabySteals tonight. Off I go to update our website. Wish me luck!

Oh, and thanks for sticking around to listen to the marbles.

What’s Logic Got to do With Anything?

Daddy explains rockets to Super Dude while the Bug just wants to go already

Super Dude, my bright and sensitive son, will be 6 in February. But for a kid of almost 6, he asks some pretty amazing questions. And his speech pattern is pretty logical. Every time he asks a question that requires affirmation, he ends it in the inquisitive yet decisive “Is it!” whereas we would ask “Isn’t it?”. Example: “That car is going pretty fast, is it!” instead of “That car is going pretty fast, isn’t it?” Which makes my husband and I ask why we end in the negative question? We don’t correct him on it. As with most of his word choices, they will be conformed into common Americanized English in time and we will lament the days when he called strawberries “Car babies”. Words he uses, like “yesternight” instead of “last night”, we just let alone. After all, yesternight is a word. As I said, his speech pattern is pretty logical.

But the questions he asks are pretty insightful for an almost 6 year old. One day he was singing “God is first”, a song he learned in Sunday school the previous week. All of a sudden he asks me, “Mama, if God is first, who is second?” “Ummm…Let’s ask your Daddy” I fumbled in reply. What kid asks that? The other day, he asks his daddy, “Why does Santa put bells on the reindeer? Wouldn’t that wake up the kids?”

Of course I never let a good question slip by unanswered. Take for instance the other day when he asked what happened to Gramom’s Daddy. Well, he died at the very young age of 46 from a heart attack. In this case, the toy analogy worked very well. “You know how if you don’t take care of your toys and use them right they could break and you won’t have them anymore? Well, the same thing happens with your body. If you don’t take care of it right, then it could break. And sometimes those breaks are so bad that we can’t get better and we die.” I could hear the gears turning in his little head. “But Mama, why when we die do our skin stays here but our insides go to heaven?”  “Well sweetheart… Our whole body stays here because when we die we get really stinky and God doesn’t like stinky stuff.” Silence, and then I spoke up again grabbing that “teachable moment” (I hate buzzwords, but it’s the only one that fit) to explain to the kids how we could live a really long time if we take care of our bodies. Then I followed that with questions about how we could take care of ourselves, of course pointing out all the things that I am a bad example of, ie exercising, eating right, etc. But Super Dude kept on with the questions, taking note of the answers I could provide and then asking his daddy for confirmation.

These sorts of questions are constant. Our little engineer in the making picks apart everything to see how it works, asks numerous questions until our ears go numb, and then quietly contemplates until he is distracted by something shiny.  Apparently he gets his “squirrel” tendencies from me. No surprise there. I’ve got 21 tabs open between 2 browsers. Nah…I’m not distracted at all.

Ahhh...something shiny! "I went fast, did I daddy! I was like zoooom, and POOF! I was gone! huh, daddy!"

Ahhh...something shiny! "I went fast, did I daddy! I was like zoooom, and POOF! I was gone! huh, daddy!"

Oh hey! Speaking of squirrels, Hubby sent me this the other day: Hang on…I gotta go find it in the other browser….Okay, got it. It’s funny, is it!

Super Dude – my skinny inspiration for inventing the bestest Kids Belts in all of the world – makes me laugh, always has a hug for me, and of course, a question. He’s gonna be a great “Maker Guy” someday!

Barney Stinson - challenge accepted - SEO drinking game

Here's to Toddler Belts!

All those lovers of How I Met Your Mother are probably laughing at the title of this post. But I have decided to rise to the challenge, set forth by my most awesome mentor and friend, and child safety expert extraordinaire, to write “30 Posts in 30 Days”. Can it be done??? I dunno…

But in my efforts to achieve better SEO (search engine optimization), I am going to try to blog as much as I can about toddler belts and see where it takes me. Okay, it won’t all be about kids belts, but maybe I’ll figure out a way to work it in somewhere… Any suggestions for topics would be great. Hey, maybe you could turn it into a drinking game…or not.

I would love to write about our wonderful customers, but I need them to write me and tell me stories about how our toddler belt helped them. Okay, enough about business.

Now for some much needed squirrel time!

You have to check out Newspaper Blackout. Not only could you spend waist a lot of quality work time their, but you could get inspired to create your very own Newspaper Blackout. C’mon! Squirrel with me!
